Maximum Character Counts and Information Formatting

When a field includes a specified maximum character count, this count includes not only the characters (letters and numbers) but also includes spaces between words and any punctuation.

Carriage returns (hitting the ENTER key on your keyboard to create separate paragraphs) are also counted as characters. These will count as two characters.

HTML markup cannot be used in any text field (single-line fields such as the Name field and multi-line text fields, such as the Description and Search Results Text). The system will remove any HTML markup when the Save button is clicked.

Character counters for multi-line text input fields

Some multi-line text input fields (also referred to as text areas) include a character counter positioned immediately below the text area. The counter displays the number of characters that you have entered into the field (number on the left) and the total number of characters that can be entered into the field (number on the right).

The counter provides a running count of the total number of characters you have entered. As you type text into the field, the number on the left will increase to reflect the number of characters you have entered. This count includes all punctuation and spaces between words.

When the limit is reached, the counter will display in bold, red color indicating that you have reached the character maximum. When this happens, you will not be able to enter further text into the field.

IMPORTANT: When the character counter is not displayed below the text area, this indicates that there is no limit to the amount of text that you can enter.
